One theory says that lifespan relates to birthrates. Animals that have many offspring early in their life have shorter lifespans than animals who take longer to have babies and the babies require more care.

Obviously, an animal must live to it's reproductive age and live long enough to care for it's offspring, so I think the comparison between animals should take that into account.
